Lady in office: Emily Sharpe

Emily Sharpe was elected as mayor in 2021, where she is the second female mayor of the town since  Beth Schmidt resigned 25 years ago. Previously, she was the seventh woman to serve on the Board of Aldermen when elected in 2017.

Elon University Habitat for Humanity aids Burlington

Elon’s Habitat for Humanity chapter is active in the local community. Around 50 students participated in Habitat projects in the Fall 2021. On Saturdays, eight Elon students spend three and a half hours working on housing construction projects including putting up the foundation, painting and installing trim.

Madeleine Albright dies at age 84

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright died at age 84 after battling complications with cancer, her family announced yesterday. Albright was the featured speaker for Spring Convocation for Honors at Elon in 2009.

Two Elon University men’s basketball players enter transfer portal

Though the two players have entered their names into the transfer portal, it is not a guarantee they will leave Elon, or that they will get an offer to play elsewhere. They have simply been granted a release so that other schools may contact them if interested. The drawback for student athletes is if they enter their name into the portal, their current institution is able to take away the athlete’s scholarship the term after they enter their name into the portal.

Elon University hosts town hall to review master plan

The town hall meeting included representatives from Ayres Saint Gross, an architectural and planning firm that guided the development of the current master plan. University architect Brad Moore is a member of the long-range planning committee and said the town hall was designed to see what areas will be focused on for future developments.
