Geese police organization works to relocate Elon fowl

Elon has a goose problem. It’s not that the fowl act overly foul, but take a gander around the university and you’ll see — and possibly smell and step in — their presence at the various campus lakes. Enter the Geese Police, an organization that began working on campus two months ago to remove the geese who have taken up residence at both Lake Mary Nell and Lake Verona.

Burlington-to-Berlin transplant creates sitcom

The sitcom, written by and starring Mark Janicello, follows the lives of divorced couple Tony and Tina Finelli and their two daughters, Lola and Lena. The personalities of the characters are based upon people in Janicello’s real life, and the show features live music and animated cartoons.

Alderwoman earns 2020 Main Street Champion Award

Concern for climate change leads to student business

Elon University senior Matthew Mitten fell unintentionally into business when, in 2019, he ordered his first customized shirt printed with a phrase that would come to define his company: “Climate Change is Real.” The finance and applied math double major and founder of Climate Change Apparel said he was inspired to use the phrase to promote environmentalism.

Police responded to fight, gunshots outside bar

According to the crime alert, at 12:44 a.m. police responded to a call about a fight at the pub. Before the police arrived at the pub, warning shots were fired into the air to disperse the fight. No one was injured.

Confronting religious trauma

For some, religion serves as a community, a place of support. It can serve as a common identity shared among family members or a set of beliefs one has held since childhood that governs their lives. For others, religion is a source of pain and shame, a place they feel shunned and unwelcome or even unsafe. Unlike other forms of trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, there is little research on the impact of religious trauma syndrome.

Burlington local opens beauty salon in Elon

The hair and beauty bar opened in January 2021. But the growth of an Elon student clientele had been slow until the last few weeks, according to Ashley Waddell. Waddell traded her stethoscope and scrubs in for scissors and style when she opened Brushed Hair + Beauty Bar. The salon is located next to Fat Froggs Bar off of West Haggard Avenue less than a mile from Elon’s campus.

Environmental science class pairs with Haw River Project

With the ongoing climate change crisis and pollution of the Earth, Kelsey Bitting, assistant professor of environmental studies wants her students to be part of the solution. As a part of her ENS 111, Introduction to Environmental Science class, Bitting is pairing up with The Clean Haw River Project to engage students by creating visual presentations — such as greeting graphics, articles and research presentations — that will immediately go toward helping The Clean Haw River Project’s cause.

Baseball season off to 'inconsistent' start

Elon head baseball coach Mike Kennedy described their season thus far as “inconsistent.”Currently, the team has a 7-13 record overall and is 1-2 in conference play. The team lost on March 26 to then No. 8 East Carolina 15-0. The Phoenix then returned to play against the Pirates the next day, beating them 2-1— it was Elon’s first win against at top 10 ranked team since 2013.

Academic Advising apologizes after disclosing some students’ federally protected information

The office of Academic Advising has apologized for disclosing federally protected student information. The office sent an email to students considered “at risk” during midterm evaluations, failing to blind copy recipients in a mass email. This incident violates the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA, which prohibits the disclosure of personal educational records.

Elon spring football: A tale of two quarterbacks

Since Week 3, Elon has been rotating back and forth at quarterback between freshman JR Martin and redshirt freshman Justin Allen. Martin has appeared in four games for Elon, recording a team-high 396 passing yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Allen, meanwhile, has recorded 290 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in three games played.

North Carolina NAACP files lawsuit to remove Confederate monument in Graham

Alamance County is up against a lawsuit over the Confederate soldier’s monument in Graham. The North Carolina NAACP and other advocacy groups filed the lawsuit in Alamance County Superior Court Tuesday, March 30 to have the monument removed.The state and local NAACP, Engage Alamance, Down Home North Carolina and five residents of Alamance County have filed the lawsuit against the County Commissioners to remove the Confederate monument.
