North Carolina to move into Phase 3 of reopening Friday

North Carolina will move “cautiously” to Phase 3 of reopening beginning on Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. The Phase 3 executive order will remain in effect until Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. It comes as the number of new coronavirus cases has leveled in North Carolina after a spike in August, according to Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen.

Elon University students concerned about socialization in Level 3 COVID-19 alert

In Level 3, the university is advising members of the community to adjust daily activities and limit social interactions to increase safety. For sophomore Stephanie Miljanic, the actions of the university are not socially sustainable and students are struggling with the lack of interaction. Miljanic felt that students are wondering what the long-term impacts on their interpersonal relations and mental health will be.

Elon University mascot spreads spirit, with or without sports

At every game, tailgate and sporting event, you see it. The personality and face of Elon University doing cartwheels down the fields, cheering on fans and making every person around it go wild. Even now, The Phoenix is part of Elon University culture — although it may not be able to do cartwheels on a Zoom call. Elon Athletics determined it was not safe to play sports with close contact this semester. Thus, the Phoenix found itself without its normal schedule of events for the fall.

Board members serve four-year terms, and elections for the board are held every even-numbered year.

The Board of Trustees — a governing body at the university that aids in decision-making — contains parents, alumni and donors, but is also populated by former CEOs, authors and doctors.The board is composed of 35 individuals: there are 26 male trustees and nine female trustees. 30 of the trustees, or 86%, are white.

Expandiendo la communidad Latinx de Elon con El Centro

Si bien el Centro siempre ha sido un espacio que ha abogado por la educación de la cultura latina/hispana, siguiendo la recomendación del informe del Grupo de Trabajo Latino / Hispano del 2018, el Centro decidió cambiar su enfoque. Comenzaron a trabajar para crear un centro centrado en recursos para estudiantes que se identifican como latinos o hispanos.

While El Centro has always been a space that championed Latinx and Hispanic culture education, after a 2018 Latinx/Hispanic Working Group report recommendation, the center decided to shift their focus. They began working to create a resource-focused center for students who identify as Latinx or Hispanic.

Students get involved through From the Flames Challenge

The From the Flames Challenge includes a semester-long scavenger hunt and other unconventional competitions. According to Schmiederer, it was created to help bring the community together and to encourage students to get to know Elon on a deeper level. The “quirky” scavenger hunt, found on their new Instagram page, encourages students to get to know Elon on a deeper level, while having fun solving clues for challenges.

Deep breaths: Air ventilation on campus upgraded

Physical Plant assessed each building’s unique heating, ventilation and air conditioning system over the summer, maximizing airflow while maintaining 40% to 60% humidity in each building, according to Flood. This level of humidity is ideal for limiting the spread of respiratory viruses, according to a recent study in the Annual Review of Virology.
