Elon University celebrates the class of 2019 during Commencement

A picture-perfect day greeted Elon University's class of 2019 as they walked from Alumni Gym to Under the Oaks and faced the Alamance Building one last time as undergraduates Friday, May 24. Commencement speaker Al Drago '15 captured the milestone moment and provided the class with a "post-graduation survival kit."

Elon senior found dead in southern Alamance County

Elon University senior and former member of Elon's football team Nicholas Kavouklis was found dead in a rural part of Southern Alamance County just after 2 p.m. on May 23 according to an email from Vice President of Student Life Jon Dooley. Kavouklis from Tampa, Florida, and an exercise science major.

Elon Fulbright scholars reflect on the application process

Every year, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards about 2,000 grants to recent graduates and graduate students in over 140 countries in six global regions. This year, five Elon seniors and an alumna were awarded Fulbright grants, an increase from four students last year. Four recipients accepted while two declined.

Constructing a legacy of leadership

When Provost Steven House arrived at Elon University in 2001, he was given one piece of advice from the former provost: don’t break anything. While holding on to that wisdom for the past 18 years, House has not left the university as he found it. House looked beyond not breaking anything, and he started building.

Second provost candidate speaks at Elon

Aswani Volety is the second provost candidate to speak at an open event at Elon University.  On Thursday afternoon, Volety — who is currently a marine biology professor and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington — addressed members of the community in upstairs Lakeside about his qualifications and experience in higher education. He answered how he will leverage opportunities here at Elon to approach challenges that higher education faces in the 21st century.

CEO to Farming: Reverence Farms Café

From CEO suite to farm land, one man changed his life to be with family. Bruce Nelson, part owner and manager of Reverence Farms café made the move from Boca Raton, Florida, to Saxapahaw, North Carolina, just a few years ago. His daughter, Suzanne Nelson had invested herself in farming, and Bruce decided it was time to make the move.

Power outages hit parts of campus

At 3:59 p.m. on May 15 a power outage was first reported to Duke Energy that has impacted much of the east side of campus. East Neighborhood, Danieley Neighborhood and the Francis Center are all currently without power. All together, Duke Energy currently estimates three outages in the area, which also stretches east of campus into several off-campus student housing complexes.

Nation Labor Relations Board officer recommends overruling university objection to new union

On Monday, May 13, a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) officer made the recommendation to the NLRB Regional Officer to overrule an objection filed by Elon University against the Service Employees International Union, Workers United Southern Region (SEIU)-backed push for non-tenure-track faculty members to unionize at Elon. The university and SEIU will have one week to respond to the recommendation.
