Daunting stretch challenges first-place baseball team

Don’t look now, but the Elon University baseball team is on a roll. Having won 10 of its last 12 Southern Conference games, Elon has secured a 12-6 record in the conference, good for first place in front of 10-5 Georgia Southern University. Phoenix take two of three from The Citadel

The Elon University baseball team is making a habit of scoring runs early and often. Most recently in it’s weekend series at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., the Phoenix got on the board in the first inning in two of the three games en route to taking two of three from the Bulldogs. In game one of the series, leadoff man Quinn Bower singled to lead off the game and worked his way around the bases to be knocked in on a fielder’s choice by junior first baseman Ryan Kinsella. The Bulldogs got the run back in the bottom of the second inning and the game stayed tied at one until the sixth inning when Kinsella scored junior center fielder Sebastian Gomez on a groundout to second base. The Citadel again responded an inning later, but this time took a 5-2 lead on three singles in the first four batters of the inning on Elon senior pitcher Dylan Clark.

Appalachian State sweeps softball in weekend series

In their return to conference play, the Elon University softball team experienced the all-too-familiar feeling of being swept in weekend series action, this time at the hands of the Mountaineers of Appalachian State University, 7-3, 8-5 and 7-1. In game one, sophomore pitcher Chelsea White again for the Phoenix and surrendered five runs in 2.2 innings.

Elon beats Furman to break school wins record

The Elon University women’s tennis team won their school record 17th match Sunday afternoon April 7 with a 5-2 victory at the Furman University Paladins in Greenville, S.C. The Phoenix improves to 17-3 on the year, 7-2 in Southern Conference play. Juniors Frida Jansaker and Jordan Johnston beat the Paldins duo of Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno-Kaste in the No.

Burglary reported on James Toney Drive

An Elon University student reported a burglary on James Toney Drive last night. The Town of Elon Police are investigating the incident. When the Town of Elon Police arrived on the scene, the student said she heard someone enter her house around 10:30 p.m., according to an email sent by Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of Student Life.

When in Florence: Pope Francis makes history

While many Italians have said it was very strange for Pope Benedict XVI to resign, the newly selected Pope Francis has been welcomed with open arms by many Italians. Enrico Cecconi, a professor at Accademia Europea di Firenze, said he understands why the Pope wanted to resign because of his age.
