SGA Senate Meeting: Feb. 21

At the Student Government Association Senate meeting Feb. 21, the Senate approved several changes to its constitution and bylaws in a 42-2-2 vote. As stipulated under the revised documents, a five-member ad hoc markup committee will help revise a bill or a resolution if its author and the executive vice president cannot agree on how to edit it. The bylaws were also revised to grant the executive vice president the power to extend or limit open forum discussions as he or she sees fit. “This validates the powers the executive vice president has already,” said SGA Executive Vice President Connor O’Donnell.

Last week, several buildings within the Oaks apartment complex underwent a change. Oaks A, B, E and F were renamed after prominent Elon faculty and staff members.

Ross Wade leaving position at Elon to become career adviser at Duke

Ladies and gentlemen, Ross Wade is leaving the building. Wade, the assistant director of career services for Elon University’s School of Communications, announced he will be leaving Elon March 1 to begin a new job at Duke University as assistant director of career services for the masters of engineering program. “This is a great opportunity to learn a lot of new skills,” Wade said.

Elon may redefine MOOCs for classroom use

MOOCs, or massive online open courses, have a future at Elon University. It is expected that Elon will redefine the MOOC to supplement, not replace, courses, according to Chris Fulkerson, assistant vice president for technology. MOOCs are increasing in popularity worldwide as thousands of students enroll in courses through online sites such as Coursera, Udacity, and edX. The courses are free of charge to anyone who signs up, and most do not carry course credit at traditional universities.

Faculty question the concept of an art kit in exhibition

There are not many places at Elon University where somebody can find a description of Hiroshima through scrapbooking and braille, political figure puppets and an artistic examination of shaving an ingrown hair. This year, the department of art and art history’s Faculty Biennial exhibition surrounded the idea of an art kit.

Coming home: Softball opens 2013 in new stadium

Quick! Where is East Field? Chances are good that readers of this article have no idea. The answer, for those curious, is behind East Gym and the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center near the Academic Pavilion. That venue was the home of Elon University softball for 35 seasons, dating back beyond the “fastpitch era” of Phoenix softball.
