Men's hoops notches fifth straight victory, defeats The Citadel

Junior guard Jack Isenbarger scored 22 points and dished eight assists and freshman guard Tanner Samson scored a career-high 15 points in 38 minutes of action as the Elon University men's basketball team defeated The Citadel 70-66 Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. With the win, Elon improved to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Conference, while the Bulldogs are 4-15 overall, 1-6 in the SoCon. The Phoenix held a 38-30 lead with the clock winding down in the first half before The Citadel guard Marshall Harris III hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer to cut the lead to 38-33. In the second half, Elon maintained the lead throughout, but the Bulldogs fought back to within two five minutes into the half and within four with five minutes left, but the lead held up for the Phoenix. The Phoenix got 14 points and four rebounds from junior forward Lucas Troutman, who scored in double-digits for the 18th straight game. The Citadel was led by center Mike Groselle's 20 points and nine rebounds, while guard Matt Van Scyoc added 20 points for the Bulldogs. Elon face the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Jan.

MOOCs gain national popularity, Elon to focus on 'blended' classes in the future

With music, television and even books turning digital, now the wave of web-content has turned to the classroom. “By 2020 in higher education there will be more collaborative online learning environments and a proliferation of massive online courses,” said Janna Anderson, director of the Imagining the Internet Center and researcher for the Pew Internet Project. With massive open online courses, or MOOCs, increasing in popularity, thousands of students are taking courses online through sites like Coursera, Udacity and edX.

Milestone indication of progress in shooting game for Elon men's hoops

When asked if 2,000 career points was in range, Elon University men's basketball junior guard Jack Isenbarger shrugged. He didn't even know he was hitting 1,000 until a couple of days before the Phoenix defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Thursday night in Alumni Gym. "I didn't know I was coming up to 1,000 until a couple days ago, started getting texts from friends and family, saying, 'Hey, here comes 1,000,'" Isenbarger said following the win.

Elon senior welcomes horror lovers to 'The Insanity of Mary Girard'

When Alpha Psi Omega, Elon University’s theatre honor society, began taking suggestions for the annual One Act Festival, senior Sean Liang, the society’s president, submitted Lanie Robertson’s play, “The Insanity of Mary Girard.” The play focuses on a woman’s experiences after her husband commits her to an insane asylum for becoming impregnated with another man’s child.

Beautiful, brazen and blustery Bornholm. The isolated island east of mainland Denmark is known for its vast lavender fields, steep cliffs and its well-known biking paths. The island itself is small but crowded, with nearly 40,000 inhabitants. But Bornholm’s biking paths seem endless, carrying bikers from historic, round churches to quaint harbor towns.

'Cloud Nine' examines gender issues, time shift absurdities

Theater of the absurd took on a new meaning this week, as Fred Rubeck, chair of the Department of Performing Arts at Elon, debuted Caryl Churchill’s 1979 play “Cloud Nine” in the Black Box Theatre. The play, which combined cross-dressing, a time jump and a huge helping of food for thought, presented an opportunity to laugh and ponder what people tend to overlook in their daily lives. Act I, set in British-ruled Africa, introduces Clive, a colonial administrator dedicated to his country, queen and family — a clan with more than its fair share of problems.

Flu Season at Elon

Flu season has hit Elon and the flu is spreading fast. The flu can spread by physical contact with everyday objects. "The sort of viruses we're talking about with the flu spread by what we call droplet spread," said University Physician Dr. Ginette Archinal. The keyboard you typed on or the lever you turned to grab a paper towel could be contaminated with flu virus. "When you do touch those things you touch your nose, you push your hair back you chew your fingernails you are spreading those droplets to yourself," said Dr. Archinal. There are some easy ways to prevent the flu.
