Brief: UMass pulls out OT victory over Elon men's hoops

After missing two potentially game-winning free throws in the waning seconds of regulation, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst men's basketball team defeated Elon University 78-73 in extra time Saturday afternoon in the 2012 Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase in Springfield, Mass. Elon freshman guard Tanner Samson hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 66.

A year of mourning: Conn. shooting marks latest tragedy

There is nothing stopping random acts of violence within our country. True, there are laws that attempt to govern our behavior by detouring us from doing anything evil, but these laws act to punish our actions rather than prohibit. This has never been more relevant than this year. On July 20 in Aurora, Colo., a gunman attacked movie theater patrons at the midnight premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Total deaths: 12.

Bill Morningstar, men's golf coach, to retire in May 2013

Bill Morningstar, the current head coach of the Elon University men's golf team, will retire in May 2013 after the men's golf season wraps up, according to an e-mail sent to faculty and staff today by athletic director Dave Blank. "It is with great gratitude that I inform you on the retirement of Bill Morningstar ’64, Director of Golf and Head Men’s Golf Coach, effective after the 2013 spring season in May," Blank said in the e-mail.

Water worries: Fracking studies raise concerns among Chatham County farmers

Farrell Moose is keeping an eye on his water. When the North Carolina General Assembly voted in July to legalize hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the state, he paid more than $300 for a baseline test of his well. A statewide moratorium on fracking will remain in place for at least two years while the North Carolina Mining and Energy Commission (MEC) assesses the potential effects of shale gas extraction in areas over the Triassic Basins, but Moose wants to clearly establish his current water quality before the commission completes its study.

No-Contact Order Filed Against Alexis Gray

Elon Local News worked with The Pendulum to obtain a no-contact order for stalking or nonconsensual sexual conduct filed against Alexis Gray on December 3. Gray, the 18-year-old who Elon administrators say arrived armed on campus on November 25, is the ex-girlfriend of current Elon student, Greg Seelagy.

Gray "Uses Suicide as a Threat"

Elon Local News has obtained copies of the domestic violence protective order against Alexis Gray, taken out by her ex-boyfriend, Elon student Greg Seelagy. In the document, Gray is ordered not to "assault, threaten, abuse, follow, harass...or interfere" with Seelagy. Seelagy wrote in the court order Gray contacted him, asking him to meet her for what would take "only five minutes". After Seelagy refused, Gray threatened to commit suicide if he did not show up, according to the complaint. "She has made these threats frequently for years," Seelagy wrote in the complaint.

Update: Alexis Gray Sent Back to PA

The Alamance County District Attorney charged Alexis Morgan Gray this week with felony possession of a firearm on a college campus, according to an email this morning from Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President and Dean of Student Life. Jackson's email stated that Gray returned yesterday to the Alamance County Jail after completing her psychiatric evaluation in Raleigh at the Central Regional Hospital. Smith Jackson's email said that Gray was "released to the custody of her parents after posting the required bond and being outfitted with an electronic monitoring device." The district court ordered Gray to stay in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, with the exception of Mercer County, New Jersey, Jackson said.

Elon names Rodney Parks new registrar

Rodney Parks, coming from the University of Georgia, has been named Elon University’s next registrar. Parks started at the University of Georgia in 2001, serving as the school’s senior associate registrar, and will be succeeding Mark Albertson, who has been at Elon for 34 years. During Albertson’s time at Elon, he “led the campus through numerous changes and witnessed unprecedented growth,” said Provost Steven House in an email.
