Spain's economy causes continued protests

SEVILLE, SPAIN — For students, walking home through the center of town from a late afternoon class occasionally involves navigating through an organized, yet noisy, public protest on the cobblestone streets of Seville. Shiny banners denouncing the government’s newest austerity plan, shrill sounds streaming from plastic whistles, grumbling megaphones and strategically placed clusters of police are slowly becoming part of the regular street scene in the historic city center of Seville.

Chick-Fil-A Veto Upheld by Elon SGA

The Elon SGA voted 21-20-0 to uphold Executive President Darien Flowers' veto. Twenty seven votes were required to override the veto. With the veto upheld, SGA does not take a stance against Chick-Fil-A's presence on campus. The Elon administration ultimately has the final say in whether Chick-Fil-A will remain on campus. Elon Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day shows division on campus

Student activities concerning Chick-fil-A's presence on campus has illuminated division within the Elon University community, most recently with the establishment of Elon University Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day today. Elon students senior Patrick Brown, freshman Jack Whalen and junior Michael Small created and publicized the event on Facebook. The day corresponds with a Student Government Association Senate  vote as to whether to uphold SGA Executive President Darien Flowers' veto of the resolution to terminate Elon University's relationship with Chick-fil-A.

Student improv performance takes Homecoming by storm

While Homecoming Weekend is known for its rambunctious tailgates and the crowning of a king and queen, the Department of Performing Arts has started its own tradition: the Instant Laughter comedy show. In its second year, the show, put on by students in the department, hosted two nights of improvisational comedy for peers, faculty and alumni. Hosted by junior Winston Koone, the show was made up of a variety of sketches, from “Death in a Minute”, in which the actors needed to play a scene in which they die in as close to a minute as possible, to “Shared Story”, in which the players built a story off one another’s dialogue. In order to keep the show appropriate and the players in line, sophomore Anna Weis acted as referee, blowing the whistle on any “foul play” and doling out the appropriate punishment.

Hamilton still a week or so away, Blake more

Elon University sophomore guards Austin Hamilton and Kevin Blake are recovering from injuries as the beginning of practice commences for the men's basketball team. Hamilton, a media and coaches' selection for the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team last season, is still a week to ten days away from returning to full health, while Blake is expected to be out two-and-a-half to three weeks, head coach Matt Matheny said Sunday. Hamilton missed six games late last season due to the injury as well as battling mononucleosis. "We’re very, very hopeful that Austin’s only a week to ten days away," Matheny said.

Flowers vetoes resolution against Chick-fil-A

After nearly two weeks of deliberation, Student Government Association Executive President Darien Flowers announced his decision to veto the resolution against Chick-fil-A’s presence at Elon University. The resolution, which passed 35-11 in a vote by the SGA Senate Oct.
