Academic program recognizes women’s achievements in March

Already representing 60 percent of students on campus, women will gain even more prominence in March. The women’s and gender studies program is coordinating these events in celebration of Women’s History Month. “Given the huge amount of debate and discussion about women, particularly in regards to women’s healthcare decisions, I find this opportunity to be especially important,” said Mandy Gallagher, women’s and gender studies program coordinator and assistant professor of communications. The events will include panels, digital displays in Moseley that will feature important women and a documentary screening that will include a discussion about the prominent women in history and their effect on society today. “This is a time for us to reflect on the historical accomplishments of women before us to further explore where we would like to see women go in the future,” Gallagher said.

Fun on the Job

I had a lot of fun on the job this week. As the SGA beat reporter, I covered much of the election week and did Q&As with the new executive president and vice-president. I welcomed the constant activity and excitement. Covering Robin Wright’s speech was also a pleasure.

One of my stories of this week led me to attend my first SPECTRUM event. SPECTRUM, Elon's gay-straight alliance, is one of those clubs I overzealously subscribed to in the midst of the sensory overload of my first Elon organizational fair.

Phoenix tops UNCG on wild senior night

A 38-16 start. An ejected fan. A head coach picking up a technical foul in his maiden voyage back to the place where he first perfected his craft. To say Elon University's 93-79 victory over  UNC-Greensboro Saturday night was eventful may be putting things lightly. Drew Spradlin, Elon's lone senior, swished an 18-foot jump shot seven seconds into play — initiating a rapid start to the game's first few minutes.

Relating to the story

This week my assigned story focused on an international career conference taking place next week. I was excited to write this story because I am personally interested in working abroad after I graduate, so this fit right into my goals. When I began interviewing the students, I asked them about their international experiences, which would usually cause us to go off topic and spend a good ten minutes talking about our study abroad experiences.
