I do: Senior awarded finalist in honeymoon contest

When senior Spanish education major Phyllis Jarrell got engaged last November, she and her fiance didn’t anticipate being one of three finalists in an all-expense paid honeymoon to Fiji. Jarrell and fiance Tyler Claytor, a senior math education major at Wake Forest University, were selected as semifinalists in the the contest they entered on a whim after she saw an advertisement in BRIDES Magazine. Claytor proposed to Jarrell near a Japanese garden and waterfall in Maymont Park in Richmond, Va.

iMedia students put real-world skills to test with fly-in projects

Graduate students’ winter fly- in projects couple professional experience with social action. In January, iMedia graduate students at Elon University took the course COM 570 — Interactive Project for the Public Good, during which they worked in teams to create an interactive media project for the common good in a foreign country. “The students get a chance to put the skills they’ve learned to date in the program to use in an accelerated project, one that’s far greater in scope than anything they’ve worked on so far,” said Phillip Motley, assistant professor of communications, who led one of two Costa Rica programs.

At long last, Grammy Awards stun for right reasons

There is something to be said about society when the phrase, "Best Grammys ever!" is (albeit pleasantly) surprising. Nevertheless, those three words were splashed across social media for at least an hour after last night's broadcast of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, and for good reason. In the middle of awards show season, it's tough to be the Grammys.

2012 football slate promises tough matchups

Spring show reveal evokes mixed reactions

The Elon University Student Union Board announced Mac Miller and The White Panda will perform at the Spring Show during the final timeout of the first half of Saturday’s men’s basketball game. “I think it was an awesome reaction,” SUB President Amanda Long said.

Southeast Alamance High School athletic program continues to evolve in second year

When Southeast Alamance High School opened in 2023, BJ Condron had been considering joining the athletic administration. He had coached women's basketball at Orange High School for 10 years, but started to have interest in the athletic department. Condron said he wanted to establish multiple principles after being named the athletic director. He listed one of his goals as forming a beneficial experience for all students playing sports. In doing so, Condron said it’s necessary to prioritize setting a culture around the sports program.

Elon University punter has historic year amid return to Phoenix

Many football teams look to their quarterback, running back, wide receiver or maybe a player on defense to be their star. Redshirt junior punter Jeff Yurk has been a bright spot for Elon in a position that often goes unnoticed and underappreciated. Yurk has had a great year so far with 20, 50+ yard punts, including a season-long of 72 yards. As of November, Yurk led the FCS in yards per punt with 48.9, which is on pace to break the FCS single-season average record. Yurk’s career average is also in the top 20 in FCS history.
