Elon University to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Week was first implemented in 1968 by former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens with ancestors who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South American. Twenty years later, the week expanded to a full 30 day period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Elon Town Council debate new social district

At Elon's regular town council meeting, council members debated the repercussions of making downtown Elon a “social district.” This change would mean that in a limited space, beer and wine purchased from local restaurants can be enjoyed outside.

Elon University named No. 1 national university for excellence in undergraduate teaching by U.S. News & World Report for second consecutive year

Elon University is ranked No. 1 for excellence in undergraduate teaching for the second consecutive year by the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” Guide, which released rankings Sept. 12. The university also received a No. 6 ranking in the “Most Innovative,” gaining three spots from last year, and was ranked No. 89 overall among national universities.

Get to know the overnight Elon University staff

It’s 3 a.m. inside Belk Library. Because the building is open all night during weekdays, all the lights remain on. From the first floor, it’s impossible to hear Tammy Wilson, Belk’s overnight janitor, wiping office windows and emptying trash cans on the second and third floors. Even for a library, the silence is overwhelming.

Sweet B Cookies to open Holly Hill Mall storefront

Burlington resident Brittany Shaw gives back to the community through what she knows best — baking cookies. She began baking as a way to make money while in nursing school. Now, she owns her own company, Sweet B Cookies. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, she had to close and find another job, but Shaw said as she gets back into business, she never lost sight of her dream.
