Students present research upon completion of SURE program

The 45 students in the SURE program have worked full time throughout the summer with faculty research mentors on programs of interest. Each student received a $3000 stipend, and the program culminated in a poster session July 20, giving students the opportunity to showcase their research.

Elon Watches: Obi-Wan Kenobi

The show follows Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, as he eludes the Empire after the events of the prequel trilogy. Princess Leia, played by Vivien Lyra Blair, is kidnapped, and Kenobi must come out of hiding to rescue her and bring her back to Alderaan. All the while, Kenobi is hunted by the Second Sister, played by Moses Ingram, and Darth Vader, played by Hayden Christensen.

Elon Town Council delays vote on Parc Northwest development

Elon Town Council voted to continue the conversation regarding the rezoning request made by GreenHawk Development, a firm which plans to create a mixed use development, Parc Northwest, in Elon. This decision came during the council’s regular meeting July 12, after a month that included a neighborhood meeting, technical review committee meeting and planning board meeting, as well as a public hearing where Mayor Emily Sharpe deemed this rezoning request one of the most contentious rezoning discussions she’s been a part of.

Carolina Panthers waive former Elon quarterback Davis Cheek

Just two weeks before the beginning of the team’s training camp, the Carolina Panthers have waived former Elon University quarterback Davis Cheek. The move comes six days after the Panthers acquired quarterback Baker Mayfield, the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, from the Cleveland Browns via trade.

Biden signs executive order to protect access to abortion

President Joe Biden signed an executive order today in an attempt to protect access to reproductive health care services. The executive order outlines actions intended to lessen potential penalties that those seeking an abortion could face after the ruling, as well as protect access to abortion medication by mail.

Alamance Democrats approve candidate slate, elect secretary

Beth Kennett, first vice chair of Alamance County Democratic Party opened the July 7 meeting with a call to action. The general election is Nov. 8 and Kennett said the party has a lot of work to do before then and believes party members must work together in order to get the candidates they want into office.

2022-23 academic year marks 30 years of common reading at Elon University

For the 30th year in a row, Elon University will continue its common reading program and has selected, “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World—and Why Things Are Better Than You Think” by Hans Rosling for the 2022-23 academic year. A committee composed of faculty, staff and students chose the book as one that represents the core values of the university for freshmen students.
