Phoenix tops UNCG on wild senior night

A 38-16 start. An ejected fan. A head coach picking up a technical foul in his maiden voyage back to the place where he first perfected his craft. To say Elon University's 93-79 victory over  UNC-Greensboro Saturday night was eventful may be putting things lightly. Drew Spradlin, Elon's lone senior, swished an 18-foot jump shot seven seconds into play — initiating a rapid start to the game's first few minutes.

Men's basketball loss to Western Carolina puts regular season championship hopes on brink

When Elon senior guard Drew Spradlin missed the first of three potentially game-tying free throws, the game was over. A hard-fought, foul-heavy Saturday afternoon basketball game ended with a jubilant Western Carolina University squad and a disappointed Elon Phoenix team as the Catamounts defeated Elon 78-76 in overtime Saturday evening in Alumni Gym. “It’s a tough loss,” Elon sophomore forward Ryley Beaumont said.

Hitting high notes on and off the basketball court

On the court, a certain rhythm is responsible for the Elon men’s basketball team snagging second place in the Southern Conference’s North Division. But outside the gym, some of the guys still rely on pattern, practice and a different kind of move.

Jack Attack: Isenbarger's 34 lead Phoenix to win over The Citadel

One word that Elon sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger likes to use to describe his play is “aggressive.” Saturday night certainly showcased that, as the Zionsville, Ind., native scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Elon Phoenix to a crucial home victory over The Citadel Bulldogs 71-66 Saturday night in Alumni Gym.

Phoenix win wild, 'roller coaster of emotions' double-overtime game

Roger Dugas’s lone contribution to the statistics sheet, besides a missed field goal, was an assist, but boy, was it a big one. The Elon junior forward’s inbound pass down the court found sophomore guard Jack Isenbarger for an easy layup with 17 seconds left in double-overtime to put the winning points on the board in an intense contest as the Elon Phoenix defeated the College of Charleston Cougars 99-98 in Alumni Gym Thursday night. “I am very proud that we as a team got a great, great victory and it’s a team victory,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said.

Men's basketball faces crucial stretch of home matchups

The Elon University men’s basketball’s loss to Appalachian State University could be symbolized by a number of things that happened Saturday afternoon in Boone. Maybe it was the three Phoenix air-balls in a matter of 30 seconds or so in the first half. Maybe it was the deflation seen on the bench in the last five minutes, where junior forward Brett Ervin’s attempt at a hand-slap with freshman guard Kevin Blake was denied when Blake returned to the bench after being subbed out. Maybe it was sophomore forward Ryley Beaumont’s brief horse-collar of Mountaineer forward Nathan Healy with less than a minute left while Healy attempted a layup, almost knocking him down.

Hustle, craftiness propel Phoenix to win over Mocs

Jack Isenbarger picked a good time to notice something wrong in the Chattanooga defense. With Elon University trailing by a point and just over a minute remaining in the game, the sophomore guard noticed a Mocs defender "sleeping" in the post and threw a pass up to Lucas Troutman. The sophomore forward didn't see the ball until it was halfway on its path near the basket.

Elon gets behind early, falls to Samford

With the losses piling up and nothing seeming to work, Elon University head coach Matt Matheny is doing anything he can to change the Phoenix's fortunes. On Thursday night against Samford University, that meant trotting out a different starting lineup.
