Elon women’s soccer opens season with win over George Washington

In the Elon University women’s soccer season opener against the George Washington University Colonials on Aug. 19, junior forward Molly Mahoney scored the team’s first goal of the season in the 39th minute to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. The team went on to win the match 2-0, with Mahoney’s goal ultimately serving as the game winner.

Parking lots blocked, roads closed for move-in 2021

Students with cars parked in residential neighborhoods are asked to move them to alternate locations by 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. Faculty and staff are asked to park in the Arts West, Oaks, South Campus and Station at Mill Point lots. Campus roads are partially closed and one-way from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Iconic Plaza renamed Medallion Plaza

At the Elon University 2021 opening day ceremony, President Connie Book announced the renaming of Iconic Plaza to Medallion Plaza, to honor the service of both individual medallion recipients and the Elon community as a whole. Book also discussed the Boldly Elon strategic plan and what the upcoming academic year will hold.

Redistricting data for NC released

The United States Census Bureau is set to release redistricting data for North Carolina from the 2020 Census on Aug. 12. Legislators in the North Carolina General Assembly will use Redistricting data to redraw congressional districts, state senate districts and state house districts.

Masks reinstated for beginning of semester

Beginning Aug. 16 all students, faculty, staff and visitors must wear masks in indoor campus spaces. The decision was made out of “an abundance of caution” due to the number of community members traveling to campus at the beginning of the semester and the increased virus transmission in Alamance and Guilford counties due to the Delta variant of the coronavirus, according to the university.

Board of Aldermen approves Equality Resolution

The Board of Aldermen approved an Equality Resolution, after nearly four months of discussion, at the Aug. 10, 2021 meeting. The board also recognized the promotion of Lt. Lyle Anibal to assistant chief of operations at the town of Elon police department, discussed commonly asked questions regarding water and sewer bills and approved a resolution for the town of Elon to secure loans for the purchase of the Travis Creek Pump Station from Gibsonville.

Board of Aldermen hears preliminary ADA self-assessment findings

The Board of Aldermen met for an agenda session Monday, August 2. Members discussed the town’s self-assessment of the accessibility of facilities and programs, a budget amendment for the police department and retirement benefits for town employees. The board also discussed adopting an equality resolution and the town’s decision to look into vaccination and mask requirements for town employees.
