Kimberly Holt, owner of Pandora’s Pies in downtown Elon, said her decision to close early during the hurricane weather for the safety of her employees meant losing out on business from one her business’s busiest weekends of the year.

Father-son duo spruces up Elon's campus following storm

On the morning of Oct. 1, Chris Breedlove, owner of High Rock Land and Hardscapes Landscaping Company, received a dreaded phone call from Elon University. The university informed him that high winds from Hurricane Ian uprooted trees on campus — the same trees his company had planted only months before.

Billy D’s holds soft opening at Elon University

Forty-three days later than anticipated, Billy D’s Fried Chicken has opened. It was originally set to open within the fall semester, but was delayed due to issues with the general contractor, according to head chef and owner William Dissen.

Hurricane Ian foils Family Weekend plans

As Elon University freshman Addison Fry got ready for classes the morning of Sept. 30, her family — who originally supposed to come for Family Weekend — was still over 600 miles away at home in Orlando, Florida. Hurricane Ian grounded Fry’s family in Florida, and they were stuck waiting out the storm and attending to damage afterward.

Ian's interruption: Elon students, families work around storm

Hurricane Ian put a damper on the first day of Family Weekend for over 1,000 families at Elon University. In its course, Hurricane Ian rolled over central Florida and downgraded to a post-tropical depression. It regained strength again before hitting South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, and before Ian made landfall in North Carolina, the town of Elon was already seeing its effects.

Town of Elon Police releases statement regarding Halloween festivities at Oak Hill Apartments

Ahead of Homecoming and Halloween festivities, town of Elon Police released a statement to the residents of Oak Hill Apartments stating they have been made aware of a planned, large-scale party rumored to take place within the apartment complex Nov. 2. The memorandum, released Oct. 28, also stated that if such a gathering occurs, those who are responsible may be subject to legal action including criminal charges and fines. Assistant Elon Police Chief Kedrick King said the decision to release the memorandum was based on previous incidents that have taken place at Oak Hill.

Alamance, Guilford juvenile detention rates reach highest in more than a decade

Steven Isaiah Bradshaw was 11 years old the first time he went to Guilford Detention Center. He was detained again at 13, 16 and 18 years old for various robbery and gun charges. Matthew Cappello, Alamance County’s lead juvenile court counselor, said recidivism — or the likelihood of criminal offenders reoffending — is one of the state’s biggest concerns within the juvenile and criminal justice systems. In 2023, recidivism reached 80% for prisoners with juvenile records in the United States. To combat this, Cappello said North Carolina has made it a priority to invest in diversion and restoration resources rather than punishment and deterrence techniques such as detainment.
