Elon University hosts Iraq War panel 20 years after invasion

When the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Ahmed Abdullah Al Fadaam, Elon University professor of communication design, lived with his wife and two children in Baghdad. He suspected Iraq would be next. Then in 2003, a mortar shell — an explosive weapon — fell in their neighbor’s yard, making his prediction a reality.

Elon University students look for counseling services elsewhere due to lack of accessibility on campus

According to its website, Elon’s student health and counseling services’ mission is to provide medical and mental health care to students. The university's counseling services offer students access to mental health support with a staff that is trained and prepared to help students with a wide range of educational, social and emotional challenges through goal-oriented therapeutic sessions.

Fellows Weekend brings almost 2,000 people to Elon University

Elon University’s largest admitted students event, Fellows Weekend, is underway Friday, March 3. Including 762 prospective students, 1,928 people total are registered to attend Fellows Weekend, according to Vice President for Enrollment Greg Zaiser. During Fellows Weekend, finalists for the eight fellows programs — honors, business, communications, Elon College, engineering, leadership, nursing and teaching — visit campus for interviews with faculty and current students. Tours, open houses, information sessions and more are also held throughout Friday and Saturday.

Local female police officers share challenges, overcoming sexual harassment and plans for equity. Throughout her career, Blackwelder said she felt she had to try harder than her male coworkers while facing sexist jokes and innuendos from coworkers and sexual harassment from superiors as a young officer.

Social district to open in downtown Elon

The town of Elon is establishing a social district — an area that allows patrons of downtown businesses to purchase and drink alcohol outdoors — outside of local restaurants such as Pandora’s Pies, MaGerk’s and TANGENT Eat+Bar.

Elon University’s Active Citizen Series hosts spring deliberative dialogue on mass shootings

Since the dialogue was first planned four months ago, community and school shootings have only increased into the new year — 94 mass shootings have been reported in 2023 as of Feb. 28, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The discussions were partly led by a guide from the National Issues Forums Institute on How Should We Prevent Mass Shootings in Our Communities, with students, faculty, staff and community members sharing additional ideas for prevention and exchanging views.

Tuition, loan interest increase amplify Elon student concerns

Junior Jasmine Smith toured colleges knowing she might not be able to attend a four-year university without a scholarship. She had two choices in spring 2020 — the second semester of her senior year of high school —  pay upward of $62,000 per year for the University of the Arts in Philadelphia or pay what was $51,062 per year at the time.  Despite a scholarship, Smith is paying her tuition and fees out of pocket.

Cheating or a resource: Elon University faculty balance ChatGPT in classroom

The bot in question is an artificial intelligence chatbot called ChatGPT, released in November 2022 by San Francisco-based research laboratory OpenAI. It is not the first of its kind — Siri, Grammarly and customer service bots are all examples of chatbot technology. But ChatGPT distinguishes itself with its ability to answer advanced, creative questions and remember the thread of dialogue.

Ashton Newhall to be Elon University’s 2023 commencement speaker

Ashton Newhall '98 will deliver the keynote address for the class of 2023 at Elon University's undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 19. The 133rd Commencement Exercises will include two ceremonies for the Class of 2023 in Schar Center. The 9 a.m. diploma ceremony will be for the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education and Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences. The 2:30 p.m. diploma ceremony will be for the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business and the School of Communications.
