Book bans, challenges impact local Burlington bookstore

When a book is placed on a banned book list, Owner of Persnickety Books Ian Baltutis notices — right before the title flies off the shelf. The Burlington used bookstore has everything from textbooks and classics to graphic novels and children’s chapter books, and Baltutis said banned books find their ways onto the shelves, too.

Black residents in Alamance County search for a safe space

According to Seneca Rogers, a candidate for the Alamance Board of Education, the need for more meeting spaces throughout Burlington has been a goal for many members of the Black community. These spaces can be used for civic engagement, meetings with personal agendas and, most importantly, a place to express voices.

Over 97% of Elon University students are booster compliant

Elon University reported 97% of students are in compliance with the COVID-19 booster mandate as of Feb. 8. According to Dean of Students Jana Lynn Patterson, the term compliant includes both students who received the booster dose of the vaccine and those who have exemptions, whether medical or religious, and deferrals.
