Elon University Spring Break uncertain

Depending on how the coronavirus has progressed in 2021, Elon University may have to re-evaluate whether students, faculty and staff will have a traditional or modified spring break. As of now, according to senior administration at the university, how spring break will be conducted is undecided. It is currently listed on the university's academic calendar as the traditional one week off.

Rep. Ted Budd and Navy veteran Scott Huffman face off in U.S. House 13th District race

Two-term U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Scott Huffman, a Navy veteran and small business owner, to represent North Carolina’s 13th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Budd was first elected in 2016 — winning 56% of the vote — and won reelection in 2018. Huffman has never held public office, and this is his first time running.

Chaplain Jan Fuller to retire after 10 years at Elon

After ten years working for Elon University, Chaplain Jan Fuller has announced her retirement. The university chaplain and lecturer in humanities has made it a mission of hers during her time here to help students connect with their spiritual selves through promoting cultural and spiritual interaction.

Elon University issues six no trespass orders following pro-Trump convoy

Six no-trespass orders have been issued by campus police to individuals who yelled at students and faculty during a recent parade through Elon University’s campus supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid, according to Vice President of University Communications Dan Anderson. The orders are certified documents from interim Director of Campus Police Doug Dotson, delivered to the individuals after a request by President Connie Book following the convoy's ride through campus.

Elon University ranks #371 for social mobility

The social mobility category looks at a school's capabilities to graduate and support students who receive a federal Pell Grant. In this category Elon ranked in the bottom 20 for national universities, No. 371.  According to the U.S. News and World Report website, the factors that go into the social mobility category are a part of the “17 different measures of academic quality” that go into determining the overall rankings.

NC Senate District 24 candidates fight to serve Alamance, Guilford County

Republican Amy Galey and Democrat JD Wooten are facing off to win the North Carolina State Senate District 24 seat this November, covering Alamance and part of Guilford County. With incumbent Rick Gunn (R) having stepped down after his 2018 term in office, both Galey and Wooten would be serving in this role for the first time if elected.

Elon hosts flu shot clinics as winter months approach

Elon University has begun to offer clinics around campus to provide students access to a flu shot. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center has organized flu shot clinics during the months of October and November. According to an email from Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley, students will not be allowed onto campus for Winter Term or the Spring 2020 semester unless they provide documentation that they received a flu vaccine.

Elon University moves down to Moderate Alert level

Elon University has moved back down to Level 2 — Moderate Alert, according to an email from Jeff Stein, chair of the Ready & Resilient committee. The university had been in the High Alert Level since Sept. 21, after an outbreak in cases that caused the university to increase two alert levels in four days.

Los estudiantes de Ciencias de la Salud aprenden español para sus futuras carreras profesionales

Existía la posibilidad de que las clases de conversación para profesionales de la salud no se llevaran a cabo este año debido a la pandemia. Sin embargo, el programa de fisioterapia decidió continuar con las clases después de que Nan Yang, una estudiante de fisioterapia y la representante de diversidad, equidad e inclusión de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad de Elon, dijo que los estudiantes sintieron que este programa debería estar disponible, incluso si tuviera que hacerse de forma remota.

Health Science students learn Spanish for prospective careers

There was a chance the Conversational Spanish for Health Care Professionals classes were not going to happen this year due to the pandemic. However, the Physical Therapy program decided to continue with the classes after Nan Yang, a physical therapy student and the diversity, equity and inclusion representative of Elon University’s School of Health Sciences said that students felt this program should be available, even if it had to be done remotely.

Homecoming goes virtual this year to keep community safe

The events hosted this year will range from virtual tours around campus to a town hall with President Connie Book. According to the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving, Brian Feeley, the university is going to be using Zoom for most events, but will also take advantage of video reporting.

SGA hosts fireside chat with President Book to discuss student concerns

On Wednesday evening, Elon University’s Student Government Association hosted a fireside chat featuring President Connie Book with questions moderated by Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley. Throughout the chat, Book answered pre-submitted questions as well as live questions from student government representatives and other Elon community members.

North Carolina to move into Phase 3 of reopening Friday

North Carolina will move “cautiously” to Phase 3 of reopening beginning on Friday, Oct. 2 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. The Phase 3 executive order will remain in effect until Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. It comes as the number of new coronavirus cases has leveled in North Carolina after a spike in August, according to Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen.

The board is composed of Elon graduates, donors and other important members of the surrounding community and nation who pool their thoughts and resources in an effort to further the university’s commitments and goals.
