International students studying abroad

Originally from Guatemala, senior Maria Rivera moved to the U.S. to attend Elon University. While she said it was a great opportunity to live in the U.S. and experience a new culture, Rivera said she wanted to expand her abroad experience and travel even farther.

Working to diversify the students engaging in global experiences

For almost a decade, Elon University’s 2010-2020 strategic plan has emphasized the importance of growing the university’s global engagement program by committing to eight central themes to better Elon. Two of the goals in the plan were to double need-based financial aid and provide access to study abroad programs for 100% of the student body.

Keeping holiday traditions sustainable on campus

Once a year, Elon University students gather around Alamance fountain, sipping hot drinks and listening to music. Santa and Mrs. Claus can be spotted posing for cameras and talking to children. The soft light from the Luminaries illuminate paths around Alamance and Moseley Student Center. Last night, the campus and town community joined to celebrate the holiday season and take in the sights of the 35th annual Festival of Holiday Lights.

Search committee for next director of campus police finalized

Elon University has started the search process for the next director of Campus Safety and Police. Dennis Franks, who currently holds the position, will be leaving at the end of December to become the chief of police in Stallings, North Carolina — approximately two hours from Elon, just south of Charlotte.

More than just a Car Club

During his freshman year, junior Ayo Onasanya found himself constantly parking next to the same car but never met its driver. Weeks into his sophomore year, Onasanya spent some time at Org Fair chatting with the students behind the Elon Motorsports and Driving Club table and met his future roommate — the man he’d parked next to for a year.

SGA adds National Pan-Hellenic Senator position this fall

This fall, the Student Government Association added a National Pan-Hellenic Council senator position, which was filled by senior Arianne Payne. This position was added in the hope of better representing the interests of historically black sororities and fraternities at Elon University.

Alamance County film school opens in January

After 33 years working for some of the biggest names in Hollywood, Dean Jones returned home to Alamance County eight years ago. Now an Emmy-winning makeup artist, producer and director, Jones said he felt like he had to move to California to continue his career. Because of his hardships moving away to find work, Jones saw the need for a local film school in Alamance County to build the labor force in the state. The North Carolina Film & Television Working Arts School will start its first semester with five students Jan. 21, 2025.

Elon’s Irish Dance Team provides strong sense of community for members

The sound of fiddles and flutes fill the conference rooms in upstairs Lakeside as the Elon Irish Dance Team begins its weekly practice. The team is a small but close knit community made up of people from all ranges and skill levels. Some members, like senior and co-president Sarah Dawkins, have been dancing since as early as 3 years old, while others like freshman Trudie Arling, have never done Irish dance before. The uniqueness of the sport has created a strong sense of community within the club that provides an outlet for its members.
