Men's tennis downed by No. 28 Old Dominion

The Elon University men’s tennis team won the doubles point but couldn’t hold on to the lead as No. 28 Old Dominion University snapped the Phoenix’ five-game win streak Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. “I told our team we have to get a little bit tougher,” said Elon coach Michael Leonard, “I think we had to go through some of this to kind of get ourselves where we need to be in a month or so.” Juniors Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic lived up to their billing as CAA Doubles Team of the Week, delivering a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles — their fourth win in a row.

Baseball falls to Bowling Green

The Elon University baseball team’s four-game winning streak was snapped in a 6-2 loss to Bowling Green at Latham Park on March 4. Senior infielder Tyler McVicar hit his first home run of the season to give Elon (4-6) an early 1-0 lead at the bottom of the third inning.

Men’s basketball improves as CAA Tournament starts

After Feb. 25’s home loss to the College of William & Mary, a close game that left the Elon University men’s basketball team believing they could have won, head coach Matt Matheny shook his head in disbelief. It was the sixth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) home game that Elon had lost despite leading at some point in the second half.

Two women's basketball seniors to participate in coaching clinic

Two Elon University women's basketball seniors are a part of the 75-person group that will attend the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "So You Want To be A Coach" program. Senior guards Jospeha Mbouma and Nicole Razor will travel to Indianapolis to participate in a three-day workshop April 1-3. “‘So You Want To Be A Coach’ is a premier program for student athletes who want to transition into the field of coaching,” said Elon head coach Charlotte Smith.

Sophomore shining amid women's tennis struggles

In her freshman season for the Elon University women’s tennis team, Erica Braschi went 13-4 in singles out of the No. 3 and 4 slots, one of many bright spots in a strong season for the Phoenix. Amid injuries and a schedule that has featured six ranked opponents, the Phoenix have failed to channel last season’s success, sporting a 2-8 record. Along the way Braschi has moved up to the No. 2 singles slot.

Men's basketball ends regular season with win at Delaware

With its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament seeding already decided, the Elon University men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 77-59 win at the University of Delaware Saturday. Elon led for all but two minutes and ten seconds of the game, cruising to its fifth conference road victory over the last-place Blue Hens.

Men's tennis beats Brown in tight match Friday

After rallying to secure the doubles point, the young Elon University men’s 5ennis team split the singles to earn to a 4-3 win over Brown University Friday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. “It’s nice just to get a good, tough match outdoors in because we haven’t had one,” said head coach Michael Leonard, “That was something we really needed.” The Phoenix (5-3) trailed in doubles after losing 6-0 at No. 2, but freshmen Mario Paccini and Salvador Mijares rallied to win No. 1 doubles on a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). After trailing 5-1, juniors Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys rallied to take a 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 3 and clinch the doubles point for Elon. Mijares gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead at the start of singles play, winning No. 4 in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

Burnett leads women's basketball to 62-45 win on Senior Night

The Elon University women’s basketball team came into Alumni Gym Friday night with an opportunity to affirm itself in fourth place in the CAA. With a star-effort performance from sophomore guard Shay Burnett, the Phoenix beat the University of Delaware 62-45 to confirm its new standing in the CAA with an opportunity looming ahead Sunday against top-ranked James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

Men's basketball's scoreless run to end game costly in Senior Night loss

Elon University men’s basketball’s senior night ended like a handful of other home games as the Phoenix let a lead slip away late as the College of William & Mary took home the 75-65 victory in. Junior guard Luke Eddy and junior guard Tanner Samson were left nearly speechless trying to explain how Eon failed to score in the last 4:13. “I’m not really sure to be honest, I don’t have an answer,” Eddy said, who hit a three to give Elon a 65-64 lead before going scoreless the rest of the way.
