Bob Dylan once sang the words, “I’ll know my song well before I start singin’.” The media teams covering the Newtown, Conn., shooting should have listened up. As details from the shooting were released, multiple news sources announced Ryan Lanza was the gunman.
For some Elon University students, the very office that brought them here is also the one keeping them.
[box]Have photos from Festivus you'd like to share? Send them to The Pendulum at pendulum@elon.edu to keep the party going.[/box] Mud, barbeque and college kids are the three components for one notorious weekend. Festivus, Elon University's annual celebration may sound like a slightly more creative version of a college party, but for many students, it means something more. Saturday morning, hundreds of Elon students headed to Sheridan to carry on a tradition that began at Elon in 2005.
It all started when sophomore Cameron Williams was at cross country camp in the 10th grade. As a breathing exercise, one of his coaches hypnotized the team.
Al Drago and I, clusters of middle aged women and a few families took off down Huffman Mill Road; we were headed to the Best Western in Burlington.
Monday evening, the courtyard of Best Western on Huffman Mill Road exuded enticing aromas of freshly prepared cuisine and blared the musical talents of a local band. Taste of Alamance, an event where local food and beverage vendors offered samples of their cuisines to hungry guests, was responsible for the commotion.
At a University Guide retreat in the admissions office a few years ago, each staff member was asked to reveal something about themselves that most people didn’t know.
At two feet tall, Monique Johnson may be less than half the height of most, but she has never let her small stature discourage her from chasing her goals. In May, Johnson will graduate from the Elon University School of Law.
Sixty-nine-year-old O.T. Bailey has a charming southern drawl, a gracious smile and a passion for bluebirds. “I’ve fallen in love with bluebirds,” Bailey said. The retired counselor started making bluebird houses in 2004 after his former secretary gave him one as a present. “I never get sick of making them,” Bailed said.

Diversity. It’s an overused word that has been echoed throughout every corner of Elon University’s campus.
Today I spent the afternoon with an older generation. Elon hosts a program called LIFE@ELON in Johnston Hall Alumni Center that offers seminars to community members who are over 50 years old. I have to say, the seminar was not what I expected.
Jeremiah Brown may seem like a typical Elon University student, but what sets him apart from the rest is that he has been selling real estate in New York City since he was 18 years old and created an iPhone application that had more than 1,000 downloads the week it was released. Brown was driving down 34th Street in Manhattan when he saw a sign outside Rapid Realty that said it was hiring.
Dominic Del Corso has been around the world without ever leaving his Burlington home. Del Corso, a former employee of Acorn Coffee Shop, befriended a generation of Elon University students and treasured a collection of postcards they mailed him from around the world. Battling an advanced case of lung cancer, Del Corso is receiving treatment at a hospice center in Burlington and is not expected to survive much longer, according to Danelle Del Corso, his daughter. Del Corso made friends with students as well as Acorn employees.
Let's face it: there are not many spots on Elon's campus where you will find a room full of guys. But, if you head to Studio 5 in the gym, you will find just that. Senior Erik Higbee teaches a group exercise class called Broga, which is pretty much what it sounds like: yoga for guys. Higbee teaches three other yoga classes, but felt there was a need for an all-male class at Elon. "A lot of guys think yoga is girly," Higbee said.
