Jenna Manderioli

Jenna Manderioli '24 is studying Journalism and Strategic Communications with a minor in Sociology. Manderioli is a broadcast and digital reporter, writer and fill-in anchor for Elon Local News. She currently holds the role of Social Media Director and is passionate about digital communications and social media management. When not in the newsroom, Manderioli loves exercise, singing and traveling.

Tiny House, Big Impact: Elon University leads sustainable living

By the 2012-13 academic year, the Center for Environmental Studies began to take form in Loy Farm. With an agroecological center, and courses for adventure-based learning and gardening, Loy Farm continued to expand as the department pitched more and more ideas for the space. Now, a tenured professor and department chair for environmental studies, Robert Charest began teaching at Elon University 13 years ago and is a licensed architect in North Carolina — as well as a general contractor for Elon University. He has worked to bring his architectural ideas to life in his courses and into the Tiny House Project.

Finding folk: the North Carolina “Festival of Discovery”

For North Carolina Folk Festival’s director of operations, Lynn Witherspoon, this festival is “no Coachella.” Rather, she refers to it as the “festival of discovery.” People don’t attend the three-day festival in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina because they know all the words to every song. The festival’s goal is to expand its audiences’ music palette. The National Folk Festival was founded and started in Greensboro in 2015. In 2018, the National Folk Festival disbanded into different faceted festivals around the country. The “North Carolina Folk Festival” is still hosted in Greensboro and is in its 6th year.

Fire engulfs abandoned mill in Graham as nearby homes evacuated

Fire crews from across central North Carolina, including Alamance, Guilford and Orange Counties responded to afire at 300 E. Parker St. in Graham. This marked the second major fire at the complex in roughly a year after an October 2022 fire. According to Graham Fire Chief Tommy Cole, the fire began the night of Nov. 12 and continued into the morning on Nov. 13. Fire crews are continuing to work to put out remaining hot-spots around the facility. The source of the fire has not been identified, according to Beau Russell at the Graham Fire Department.

Elon Community Garden hosts 14th Strawberry Festival

Elon University's Community Garden held its annual Strawberry Festival on Friday. The festival, which is now in its 14th year, celebrates the spring season and the fruit that comes with it. The festival took place in the Community Garden, located on East College Avenue, between Hillel and the Powell House. The garden is a student-run project that promotes sustainable agriculture and provides fresh produce to the local community.
