Accounting professor awarded outstanding educator of the year

Art Cassill, accounting professor at Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, received the award for Outstanding Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Through a nomination process, the committee of member’s in the NCACPA chooses a person who has made an impact in advising and teaching, among other contributions to the field of accounting. “It is a bit overwhelming in a good way,” Cassill said in regards to receiving the award On his way to Convocation, he received a call telling him he had won the award.

Reduction in dining facilities may close 1889 Grill Room

With the closing of Harden Dining Hall in fall 2012, Elon Dining Services has plans to close 1889 Grill Room and incorporate the facility into Colonnades dining hall in order to provide more seating for students frequenting the all-you-can eat dining option. Harden Dining Hall will close so that construction of the new Global Residential Neighborhood can begin, leaving the Elon community with McEwen and Colonnades as the only two all-you-can-eat dining options.

Research into issues of body image reflects Lumen Scholar’s experiences

Her size always defined her. As a child, senior Kelly Little, who describes herself as tiny, recognized the limitations body image imposed on individuals, eventually inspiring her Lumen project and collaboration with SPARKS’ annual Love Your Body Week. As part of the week’s activities, Ophira Edut, an activist, author and national body image speaker, enlightened an audience of Elon University students, faculty and staff with information regarding body image and how it expands beyond eating disorders. Edut, author of “Body Outlaws” and co-founder of loveyourbody.com, has made it her personal mission to create a world where women and girls cherish themselves. Little contacted Edut, among other potential speakers, as a way to combine her research with Love Your Body week.

Students turn to campus bookstore for convenience, Web for low prices

Although Elon University’s campus bookstore works with Barnes & Noble to provide students with textbooks, some students have noticed that prices at the bookstore are significantly higher than those at Barnes & Noble. The solidarity between Barnes & Noble and the bookstore seems to be contested. “I’ve honestly never considered buying books at the campus store because I know I’ll get ripped off," said sophomore Allison Shamon. At the beginning of each semester, students can log onto their OnTrack account and get directed to the bookstore’s website to find a customized list displaying the required textbooks for their courses.
