North Carolina to extend Phase 3 due to a rise in COVID-19 cases

North Carolina will stay paused in Phase 3 for the next three weeks because of a rise in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press briefing today. Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Mandy Cohen said the main causes of this increase have been social and religious gatherings.

North Carolina to move into Phase 2.5 of reopening this week

North Carolina will be moving to Phase 2.5 beginning on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m., Gov. Roy Cooper said at a press briefing today. This move will allow for larger gatherings, expanding the number of people allowed indoors to 25 and 50 people outdoors. Playgrounds, museums and aquariums will also open in Phase 2.5 at 50% capacity.

Elon University students, faculty, staff and community members spoke Monday night during a virtual town hall organized by the Boldly Elon Solidarity Collective, titled “We Won’t Die for Elon,” to protest the university’s decision to bring students back to in-person classes this fall. The Facebook live has over 1,300 views.

Determining action: inside Elon University's bias reporting system and student conduct process

Reports submitted by students first go through the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence before being sent to the Office of Student Conduct. It is there that determinations are made of whether or not an incident is in violation of the Code of Conduct under the student handbook, and not at the CEIE, according to Leigh-Anne Royster, director of the Center for Equity and Inclusive Excellence.

Being an ally begins by recognizing that there is an issue of racism, according to Damion Blake, assistant professor of political science and faculty fellow for race, ethnicity and diversity. He said people need to come to terms with the history of systemic racism in America once they recognize there is an issue.
