Sydney Spencer '26 is a journalism major with minors in sport management and statistics at Elon University. She is also a multimedia reporter covering sports and local news. While not reporting, Spencer enjoys singing, watching baseball, and spending time with her family and friends. Spencer hopes to work as a clubhouse reporter for a Major League Baseball team after graduation.

Southern Alamance dominates in run-rule win over Chatham Central

With runners at first and second and one out in the bottom of the fifth, senior shortstop Mark King delivered a win for the Southern Alamance High School baseball team in royal fashion. The Patriots entered the inning with an 8-0 lead over Chatham Central. Down 0-2 in the count, King smashed a double into left field, scoring both runners and securing the walk-off 10-0 run-rule win. Southern Alamance improved to a 10-2 record and will look to build upon the non-conference victory before its next conference match at home against Person High School at 7 p.m April 1.

Chapel Hill shuts out Williams behind 17-strikeout performance

Williams High School batters stepped up to the plate on Monday night. Most, however, didn’t stay for long. Chapel Hill’s starting pitcher Channing Clark was unhittable in the team’s game against Williams. She retired 17 of 21 batters faced via the strikeout, leading her team to a 10-0 shutout victory over Williams. After surrendering a leadoff walk, Clark retired the next seven batters in a row, all by way of striking out. Williams will face off against Western Alamance at 5 p.m on March 4.

Elon University baseball excels on Senior Day

Heading into its final home game of the season, the Elon University baseball team looked to complete a few milestones with a win. The Phoenix did just that, winning 9-6 against the North Carolina A&T Aggies, and in doing so it earned its 30th victory on the season, its final home victory and punched its ticket in the Colonial Athletic Association postseason.

Elon University baseball sweeps series, fights cancer with haircuts

Going for the series sweep and the eighth straight Colonial Athletic Association victory, the Elon University baseball team showed out strong, shutting out the Delaware Blue Hens 1-0. But the best part came after, when the team stayed to stand up in the fight against pediatric cancer, auctioning off haircuts to raise $7,738 for Vs. Cancer.

Elon University women’s basketball pursues CAA championship

After the final sound of the buzzer March 2, the Elon University women’s basketball team earned one more home victory and walked off the court at Schar Center for the last time in the 2022-23 season. Five players, including graduate student guard Lenaejha Evans and graduate student center Evonna McGill, walked off the court for their final time in maroon and gold.

Elon University women’s basketball ends home season on a high note

In its final home game of the 2022-23 season, the Elon University women’s basketball team defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 52-42. A back and forth battle for the Phoenix, with a small comeback by UNCW, ended in an emotional night for the seniors and graduate students as they left the court at Schar Center one final time. Graduate student guard Lenaejha Evans came to Elon for her final college season after playing for two seasons at Rider University. She said stepping off of the court was bittersweet.

Nonprofit Indigenous organization fights the development of Buc-ee’s

North Carolina's first Buc-ee's will be constructed in Mebane on the Occaneechi-Saponi's Great Trading Path. 7 Directions of Service — a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for Native land and rights, particularly for the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation — is fighting Buc-ee’s development. “It's not just a trading path, or it's not just a historical thing, but it still has ties to our people today,” Coda Cavalier, a youth coordinator for 7 Directions of Service, said.

Downtown Gibsonville hosts 4th annual Gibsonville Girls Night

A line of pink could be seen down West Main Street as local women gathered for Gibsonville Girls Night on April 4. With shops open until 8 p.m., attendees dress in pink and go shopping. Chelsea Dickey, a contracted economic development director for the small town; Wanda Small, owner of Just be You; and Maghon Taylor, owner of All She Wrote Notes; noticed that there were many female-owned small businesses in downtown Gibsonville. “We were looking to come together and do something fun as girls,” Dickey said. “But also do something fun for the girls of Gibsonville.”
