Tonight, the pop band Fun. may celebrate the fact that they are young, but don’t accuse the Elon University women’s lacrosse team of saying that. It would be easy to make that assumption with 21 freshmen on a roster of 25 players.
In the last three minutes and one second of the Elon University men’s basketball team’s loss to the College of Charleston in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament March 10, Elon senior guard Josh Bonney went off. He scored eight points in the final stretch, trying to spark a Phoenix comeback, but the Cougars’ lead was too large. “I was just trying to attack and trying to keep us in it the best I could, just do my part,” he said. Bonney ended the game with 15 points, tying a season high in a rough senior year. The Houston, Texas native came to Elon back in 2008, making him the only player on this season’s roster that played under former head coach Ernie Nestor.
At some point, the Elon University men’s basketball team had to wake up. It was a lot sooner than they wished. Trailing the entire game, the No.
No. 3 seed College of Charleston Cougars (23-9) vs. No. 2 seed Elon University Phoenix (21-10) 8:30 p.m.
ASHEVILLE - A common cliche around NCAA tournament time, made famous by late North Carolina State University men’s basketball head coach Jim Valvano, is “survive and advance.” They were some of the first words out of Elon University men’s basketball head coach Matt Matheny’s mouth Saturday night after his team earned a 68-61 victory over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans to move on to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. With the win, Elon will face No.
The Elon University men’s basketball team goes into the Southern Conference Tournament, starting Friday, already having a successful season, by the numbers at least. But head coach Matt Matheny still thinks there’s plenty left to do. “I like where we are because I think we’re hungry,” he said.
Elon University Athletic Director Dave Blank couldn’t help but smile. The gym renovated under his direction in 2010 was packed to the brim with Elon students and excited community members clad in white Feb.
20-10 is a long way from 9-23. But in just four years, the Elon University men's basketball team improved that much. The Phoenix capped off the program's first 20-win season since 1987-1988 with an 80-66 victory Saturday night over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans in Alumni Gym, using a productive second half to cap the historic season. The win propels the Phoenix into the Southern Conference Tournament next weekend when it will face either the No.
Missed opportunities and mistakes. Just like any game, they came back to bite the Elon University men’s basketball team in its loss to Davidson College on Wednesday night, Feb.
The Times-News of Burlington heralded tonight’s matchup between Elon University and Davidson College by asking: “Does Elon measure up?
Call ‘em champs. Elon University junior forward Ryley Beaumont hit a layup in the paint with eight seconds remaining to give the Phoenix a 63-62 victory over Samford University Thursday night, Feb.
There was no question for Sebastian Koch. Once the first one fell, he wasn’t missing the second one. “In our lifetime, we’ve taken a million free throws,” the Elon University junior guard said afterwards.
Flaws exposed, winning streak ended, players down to injury. The odds stacked against them, maybe? But a win for the Elon University men's basketball team this past Saturday against Furman University, just two days after a seven-game victory streak was ended by Wofford College, was key. The adversity still exists, however.
The Elon University men's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak ended Thursday night as Wofford College defeated the Phoenix 60-50 in Spartanburg, S.C. The Phoenix held a 22-21 lead at halftime as it stayed in front of a back-and-forth game, but Wofford used a couple big runs in the second half go up 46-36 with 7:03 remaining in the second half.
Just another day in Alumni Gym for the Elon University men’s basketball team. Seventh straight victory overall.
“Next play, let’s move on, let’s focus on the here and now.” In a tough Southern Conference stretch, the Elon University men’s basketball team is doing just that. Junior guard Jack Isenbarger ended a game-long field goal-less slump by hitting a big three-pointer to give Elon a late lead the Phoenix held on to as they defeated the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans 72-66 Thursday night for their sixth straight victory. After missing his first ten shots from the floor, seven of them from beyond the arc, Isenbarger hit a contested trey from just left of the top of the key to give Elon a 68-66 lead, a lead that stuck, with 1:27 left in the game. “You’ve gotta have shooter’s amnesia some times, just forget it,” said Isenbarger, who ended the night with just six points but a game-high ten rebounds.
Elon University men's basketball sophomore guard Austin Hamilton will miss the rest of the 2012-13 season with a torn ACL.
Junior guard Jack Isenbarger scored 22 points and dished eight assists and freshman guard Tanner Samson scored a career-high 15 points in 38 minutes of action as the Elon University men's basketball team defeated The Citadel 70-66 Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. With the win, Elon improved to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Conference, while the Bulldogs are 4-15 overall, 1-6 in the SoCon. The Phoenix held a 38-30 lead with the clock winding down in the first half before The Citadel guard Marshall Harris III hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer to cut the lead to 38-33. In the second half, Elon maintained the lead throughout, but the Bulldogs fought back to within two five minutes into the half and within four with five minutes left, but the lead held up for the Phoenix. The Phoenix got 14 points and four rebounds from junior forward Lucas Troutman, who scored in double-digits for the 18th straight game. The Citadel was led by center Mike Groselle's 20 points and nine rebounds, while guard Matt Van Scyoc added 20 points for the Bulldogs. Elon face the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Jan.
When asked if 2,000 career points was in range, Elon University men's basketball junior guard Jack Isenbarger shrugged. He didn't even know he was hitting 1,000 until a couple of days before the Phoenix defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Thursday night in Alumni Gym. "I didn't know I was coming up to 1,000 until a couple days ago, started getting texts from friends and family, saying, 'Hey, here comes 1,000,'" Isenbarger said following the win.
